The Olde English Leathernecks, a local Marine Corps League Detachment, will kick off the annual Toys for Tots Campaign and the 234th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps with a ball from 6:30 to 11 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Palmetto Room, 135 E. Main St., Rock Hill.
A meal catered by Old Town Bistro will include chicken cordon bleu, roast beef, salads, green beans, roasted potatoes, rolls, desserts, iced tea, coffee and soft drinks. An open bar will be available. All That Jazz and Jules, formerly The Professionals, will provide entertainment. The reservation deadline is Oct. 25, and the cost is $35 per person.
Partial proceeds will benefit The Fallen Warriors Scholarship Fund, Wounded Warriors Project and the Toys for Tots Christmas Program, which provides toys for local needy children.
Donations of new, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at Toys for Tots bins at all four Rock Hill U.S. Post Offices, the U.S. Marine Corps recruiter's office at the Rock Hill Galleria and local businesses in Rock Hill and York. York County CROP walks
CROP Walk will be Oct. 18 from Trinity United Methodist Church in York and Oct. 25 from the Dinkins Student Center in Rock Hill. Registration begins at 2 p.m. both days, with the walks at 3 p.m. Winthrop University anticipates recruiting 18 CROP walk teams from its freshman class. Each team will have 20 students, who are asked to raise their age in dollars or canned goods for CROP. All canned goods will be donated to local food pantries. Another 17 Winthrop teams will participate in CanStruction on Oct. 24. Teams will build art projects out of canned goods in the Winthrop Coliseum. The route of the Oct. 25 CROP walk will go through the coliseum, so walkers can vote on their favorite can project. York County's CROP Walk has raised $551,982 in 31 years, with $137,996 for local agencies.
Over the Rainbow-Kenya will host a yard sale on Saturday to raise money to send food, books and toys to children in Kenya. The yard sale will be at 2023 Bristol Parkway in the Bristol Park subdivision in Rock Hill. The group is low in funding; proceeds will benefit Kenyan children. A fundraiser for Scott Hallman will be from noon to 10 p.m. Oct. 18 at The End Zone, 2354 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill. This is an all-day charity event to raise awareness about bike safety. Hallman was recently the victim of a hit-and-run accident while riding his bicycle in Rock Hill. Eleven bands will perform for free, donating engineering time, equipment, lights and drums. Free hot dogs and chips will be served. More than $2,000 for the event has been donated in raffle merchandise by local sponsors.
Grace Ministries will host a fish fry during its Terri Lynn chocolate and nut fundraiser from 4 to 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at 1511 Mount Holly Road, Rock Hill. A flounder plate, shrimp plate or chicken strip plate will be $10 for an adult plate and $6 for a child plate. A combo flounder and shrimp plate will be $11 for an adult plate and $7 for a child plate. Plates include french fries, hushpuppies, slaw and onion rings. To-go boxes are available. Proceeds from the fish fry will benefit mission projects; proceeds from the chocolate and nut sales will benefit the Terri Lynn Library Fund. The Women of the Church of Ramah Presbyterian Church will sponsor a Poor Man's Supper from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the church, 980 Ramah Church Road, York. The menu includes pinto beans, cole slaw, cabbage, vegetable soup, cornbread and a variety of desserts. The cost is $7 for adults and $3 for children ages 3 to 12. There is no charge for children younger than 3. The community is welcome.
Members of Boy Scout Troop 366 of York will have a hot air balloon ride fundraiser from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Lauren Pines subdivision. This event has been postponed twice this fall due to inclement weather. Tickets are $10 per person and include breakfast or dinner, depending on the time participants choose to ride.
