Piedmont Medical Center and Winthrop University will host a cultural celebration Sunday to recognize breast cancer survivors. The event, called Expression of Hope, will be at 8 p.m. Sunday in Winthrop's Plowden Auditorium in Rock Hill.
Rosemary Clement, Piedmont's breast cancer navigator who also is a breast cancer survivor, will speak.
Faculty members and students from Winthrop will participate in performances, including dance, poetry reading and singing. The public is invited.
An admission of one canned food item or $1 is requested.
Edgemoor Head Start
plans Friday trike-a-thon
Edgemoor Head Start will present Trike-A-Thon to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The event will start at 9:15 a.m. Friday at 1966 Westbrook Road, Edgemoor.
Head Start children will obtain sponsors who pledge money per lap or donations to St. Jude's. All contributions are tax deductible. Edgemoor Head Start has raised over $5,600 for this cause.

Monday event to focuson First Amendment
Local civil rights efforts and the public apologies that followed will be examined through a First Amendment perspective during an event, The First Amendment and Public Reconciliation, at 7 p.m. Monday in Winthrop University's Plowden Auditorium.
Invited guests include Herald columnist Andrew Dys; Van Shields, executive director of the Culture and Heritage Commission of York County; Susan Kocsis of Search for Common Ground in Washington, D.C., and a member of the York County Human Resources Committee. Alan Miller, general manager of WRHI radio, will moderate.
In a related event at 11 a.m. Monday, the York County Culture and Heritage Commission will unveil an historical marker at the former location of St. Anne School, the first integrated school in South Carolina.
Winthrop was one of eight colleges awarded a $5,000 grant through the Liberty Tree Initiative to raise awareness among college students and the community about First Amendment freedoms.

Halloween, seasonal fun
These fall events are planned:
The Charlotte Avenue YMCA will host a Halloween fall festival from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at 402 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill. Activities such as a jump house, carnival games, haunted house, concessions and prizes will be available. All ages are welcome and encouraged to wear their costumes.
Tickets are five for $1 or a wristband is available for $15. A wristband includes one slice of pizza, one drink and unlimited access to the haunted house and all carnival games.

Chandler Place Active Independent Retirement Community will host its second annual fall bazaar from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at 745 Dilworth Lane, Rock Hill.
The bazaar will include craft items, a rummage sale and a bake sale presented by the residents. Outside vendors may participate. Table rentals are $15.

The community fall festival at the Emmett Scott Center will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30 at 801 Crawford Road, Rock Hill.
The cost is $1, which includes five tickets.

It's time to sign up for
Rock Hill holiday parade
The city of Rock Hill is taking registration for floats for the annual Christmas Parade, which will begin at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4 starting on Oakland Avenue at Winthrop University and ending downtown.
Groups are invited to enter a float or a unit in the parade. Lighting on all floats and units will be vital for them to display properly during the nighttime parade.
Participants are asked to dress in festive holiday attire.
Parade entry guidelines are available at www.rockhillrocks.com. The entry deadline is Nov. 6.
