York shoe giveaway and other fundraisers planned

The women of Wesley United Methodist Church will have a shoes giveaway from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church, 110 W. Jefferson St., York.

Shoes will be available for children, women and men. Halloween goodies for children also will be provided. For more details, call Vivian Quinn at 803-684-6462.

These other fundraisers and charitable events are planned:

The Highland Ruritan Community Fall Carnival will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Lowry's Schoolhouse. Dinner will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, desserts and drinks. Children's activities such as kiss the pumpkin, go fishing, plinko, moon sand, pony rides and bingo will be available. For an extra $1, guests can walk through the haunted trail. All proceeds will benefit the medical expenses of Ervin Connorand Rube Guy, both cancer patients. Family Connections will host its fifth annual Big Thursday event at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 at the Baxter Hood Center. Tickets are $35, available to adults ages 21 and older. This is an event for Clemson and University of South Carolina fans to raise money for a worthy cause. For details or to reserve tickets, call 803-366-4839.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2889 and the honor guard will host a barbecue sale from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Post, 732 W. Main St. Rock Hill. Plates include pulled pork, slaw, baked beans, a roll and iced tea. A donation of $10 is requested. Tickets are pre-sold at the VFW Post.

First ARP Church will have a Service of Remembrance at 4 p.m. Nov. 1 at the church, 201 E. White St., Rock Hill. The public is invited.

Tillman Music and Sound will host a string day and canned food drive from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at 596 N. Anderson Road, Rock Hill. Participants bringing in a six-string electric or acoustic guitar and two cans of food will receive a free set of strings and string change. Participants bringing in a four-string bass guitar and four cans of food will receive a free set of strings and string change. A limit of two guitars per person will be enforced. Jerusalem Baptist and Unity Presbyterian churches will host the Second Harvest Partners mobile food pantry at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Jerusalem Baptist Church on Steele Street in Fort Mill. Volunteers are asked to arrive at 8:30 a.m. Second Harvest Partners is a ministry sponsored by Providence Presbytery and St. Mary's Catholic Church. Sixteen local congregations have joined to host the mobile pantry at 10 sites during 2009. The final site will be on Nov. 5 at Hermon Presbyterian church, sponsored by Hermon and St. Mary's Catholic churches. The Humane Society of York County will host a bow-wow photo event sponsored by Bowzee Wowzee Pet Boarding and Karen Premo Photography from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 14 at 116 Massey St., Fort Mill. The cost is $20 for a 5-by-7-inch photo of a dog. Proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of York County. For details or to make an appointment, call 803-802-2699.

Thrift Store Ministries of York will have a sale from Monday to Saturday. All Halloween items are half price, men's pants and shirts are buy one get one free and all women's dresses are half price. All proceeds benefit needy families in the York school district area.

Winthrop, PMC to honor

breast cancer survivors

Piedmont Medical Center and Winthrop University will host a cultural celebration to recognize breast cancer survivors. The event, Expressions of Hope, will be at 8 p.m. today in Winthrop's Plowden Auditorium.

Rosemary Clement, the hospital's breast cancer navigator and a breast cancer survivor, will speak. Faculty members and students from Winthrop will participate in performances, including dance, original poetry reading and singing.
