Young Yorkville Players to perform Shakespeare

The Young Yorkville Players will present "The Shakespeare Project" and "The Fifteen Minute Hamlet" at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and July 25 and 26 and 3 p.m. Sunday and July 27.

In "The Shakespeare Project," adapted by James Zager, the most famous scenes and monologues are taken from a selection of Shakespearean works and presented in a contemporary style with new interpretations.

In "Fifteen Minute Hamlet," Tom Stoppard's version takes the most famous and best-loved lines from Shakespeare's "Hamlet" and condenses them into a hilarious 15-minute show.

Fort Mill Playhouse announces auditions

The Fort Mill Community Playhouse will have auditions for its dinner theater presentation of "Plaza Suite" by Neil Simon from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 to 9 p.m. July 21 at the playhouse, 615 Banks St., Fort Mill.

The show is an adult comedy with some dramatic moments set in the '60s. Lead roles are for two women and two men ages 40 to 50 and one woman and man, both in their 40s. Other roles are available for two men and one woman in their late teens to early 20s and one woman in her 30s. Actors who can play characters other than their age are welcome to audition.

Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. Director will be Ted Delorme. Production dates will be Sept. 25 through 27 and Oct. 3 and 4. For details, call the playhouse at 548-8102 or visit www.fortmillplayhouse.org.

Steak night planned at local Shrine Club

The Crescent Shrine Club will have a steak night from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday and every third Saturday of each month at the club, 2065 McConnells Hwy., Rock Hill.

Steak is $12 and hamburger steak is $9, and both plates include baked potato, tea or coffee, roll and salad bar. The event is open to the public. For details, call Barry at 684-4117.

Step out for a luau at VFW on Saturday

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 9138 is having a luau from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the post, 1442 Harris Road, Fort Mill. Midnight Special will play music. Food will be sold. Admission is free. For details, call the post at 547-5480.

Christmas in July among local benefits

The following groups will have fundraisers:

n The Lake Wylie Lioness Lions Club will have its annual Christmas in July sale from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at its store, Sweet Repeat, 4094 Charlotte Highway, Lake Wylie. The sale will raise money for local community organizations.

n The Rock Hill Ecumenical Choral will have a fish fry from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at 1307 Ogden Road, Rock Hill. All plates are $6 and include one meat and two sides. Meat choices are croaker and whiting and side choices are baked beans, cole slaw, potato salad, bread and cake. Fish sandwiches are $3.50, hot dogs are $1.50 and sodas are 50 cents. Preservations society to hear about battles

The Lewisville Preservation Society will meet at 7 p.m. today at the Front Porch Restaurant, 3072 Lancaster Hwy., Richburg. The group will individually order from the menu.

Guest speaker will be Charles Montgomery, who will discuss the Battle of Mobley's Meeting House from the Tory's, or Loyalist, point of view. The battle occurred during the American Revolutionary War in the Mobley Settlement, Fairfield County, near present-day Winnsboro during the Southern Campaign of Lord Cornwallis in 1780.
