Hickory Grove man dies from injuries in weekend car wreck

- Toya Graham

Authorities say alcohol contributed to a single-car wreck that killed a 20-year-old Hickory Grove man over the weekend.

Stephen "Stevie" James Alexander of 13684 Smithford Road died Monday from head injuries he received in a Sunday wreck, said Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler.

There were no passengers in Alexander's car, Fowler said.

Though Fowler said alcohol played a role in the early morning wreck, he declined to disclose Alexander's blood-alcohol level.

Around 3:55 a.m., Alexander drove a 2001 Pontiac south on Old Chester Road in Blacksburg. He ran off the left side of the road, struck a concrete culvert and flipped multiple times, said Cpl. Bryan McDougald of the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Alexander was ejected from the car. He was flown to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, where he died on Monday.

As of Monday, 698 people had died on state roadways this year, according to the state highway safety office. That's up from 642 people who died on state roads through the same time last year.
