Special teams' fourth-quarter heroics lift Fort Mill past Lewisville

- Doug Hobbs

RICHBURG -- The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets relied on their special teams to pull out a win against the Lewisville Lions at Lions Stadium on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets' Jared Shaw scored two touchdowns, on a punt return and an interception return, both in the fourth quarter.

Lewisville dominated the first three quarters and piled up 211 yards while holding Fort Mill to only 35 yards of total offense. In the third quarter, Lewisville ran 13 plays to Fort Mill's six, but the Lions came up empty by throwing their second interception in the end zone. Both end-zone interceptions were made by the Yellow Jackets' Drew Nethery.

Lewisville had its chances early. Its first two drives stalled inside the red zone in the first quarter, and a second-quarter drive ended with an interception in the end zone.

"We knew they were going to control the ball with their backs and big lineman," Fort Mill head coach Ed Susi said.

After Shaw scored the touchdown on the punt return, Lewisville was penalized on the extra-point attempt for having too many players on the field. With the ball moved to the 1-and-a-half yard line, Fort Mill went for two, and Max Simmons busted through to make the score 8-7 with 8:48 remaining in the game.

"I was going to kick it, but with the ball moved up, we decided to go for two from our Rambo set," Susi said. "We put our two biggest players in the game, line them up in front of Max. We took a chance, and I thought Max could get our 1-and-a-half yards."

After gaining the lead, the Yellow Jackets' defense stepped up and forced Lewisville to five plays and out. The teams traded interceptions with Fort Mill's going the distance.

Fort Mill plays newly formed and crosstown rival Nation Ford next week, while Lewisville plays at its big rival, Great Falls.

"Our defense shut them out," Lewisville head coach Floyd Drum said. "Special teams hurt us, and they scored. Once they got the lead, they just pounded us."
