York jumped on out early on the Lady Warriors and cruised to an easy 56-21 win over Indian Land Tuesday night at York High School, remaining undefeated on the season with the lopsided win.
The Lady Cougars defense simply dominated a young Indian Land squad that will only improve throughout the season. York's pressure forced multiple turnovers for Indian Land, as the Lady Cougars held the Lady Warriors to just four points in each of the first two periods.
Indian Land coach Tamara Jacobus is rebuilding after losing Jean Marie Harris, Marrissa Witherspoon, and Amanda Smith, who led the Lady Warriors to the state championship game a season ago.
Freshman Hannah Harris, younger sister of Jean Marie, led the Lady Warriors with six points. Harris looks to follow in her sister's footsteps, as Indian Land looks for a leader.
Nardia Robins paced the Lady Cougar attack with a dozen points, while Erika Shannon and Brittany Merriweather chipped in with eight and ten points, respectively.
The only thing that went wrong for the Lady Cougars was a bucket by Keisha Thacker. Only problem was the she shot in the wrong basket. Thacker took it in stride, laughing with one of the officials and York coach Paula Blackwell wrote a good natured "happy birthday" on her whiteboard to Jacobus for the free deuce.
"Keisha is one of our more experienced players" said Blackwell, "that shot will be one that she'll never forget. She had a great attitude about the shot. Overall, we wanted to make sure we played better defense. Our offense will keep getting better the harder we play on defense."
