Tootsie Pop Day, yard sales among fundraisers

These fundraisers are planned:

• The BaaRamEweths Sheep 4-H Club will have a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at 2350 S.C. 161, York. Sale items include baked goods, coffee and hot dogs. The club is seeking individuals or orgainizations that would like to participate. Tables are $5. The club also is accepting new members for its sheep project, open to ages 5 to 19. • The York County Sheriffs Office will have a yard sale from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the First Wesleyan Church Family Life Center, 1830 York Highway, York. Hot dogs and refreshments will be sold. Proceeds benefit Special Olympics of South Carolina. The church will have a bake sale for the Family Life Center fund. • The Rock Hill Lions Club will have a Tootsie Pop Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Wal-Mart at the Rock Hill Galleria. The club will sell Lions brooms and flavorings. For details, call Gary at 325-2133. Brooms are also available at Mitchell's Barber Shop, 2101 Mount Gallant Road, and Animal Supply House, 1025 N. Anderson Road, both in Rock Hill.

• Thrift Store Ministries of Western York County, 31 N. Congress St., York, will have a buy one get one free sale on all bathing suits and shorts this week. The store needs donations of furniture, clothing, appliances and other items. Volunteers are needed. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Saturday; the store is closed Wednesday. Thrift Store Ministries serves needy families in the York school district. For details, call 628-0808.

• Alpine Lodge No. 208 and Clover Chapter No. 138 Order of the Eastern Star will have a hot dog sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Alpine Masonic Lodge, 502 North Main St., Clover. Hot dogs are $1.25 each and can be made to order. Eat-in or carry-out are available.

High school grads, families having reunions

• The Rock Hill Bearcats class of 1954 will have a spring fling from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Rock Hill Moose Lodge, 1025 Ebinport Road. A barbecue lunch will be served. Local groups have meeting news to share

The following will meet:

• The Lewisville Preservation Society's June ladies night date has been changed. Ladies night has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. June 19 at the Front Porch Restaurant, 3072 Lancaster Highway, Richburg. Visitors are welcome. A buffet dinner will be sold. The program wil be Archaeology in the Catawba Valley and speaker will be Dr. Brett Riggs of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Department of Archaeology.

• The Marine Corps League, consisting of retired and veteran Marines, will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, 732 W. Main St., Rock Hill. Meetings are held the second Tuesday of every month. Visitors are welcome. For details, call Don Hicks at 517-7253 or 328-1054.

• The Southern Piedmont Adoptive Families of America will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the first-floor temporary conference room of the Catholic Diocese Pastoral Center, 1123 S. A welcome and introduction for new members and visitors will be at 6 p.m. A discussion titled "How to Navigate the System: Initial Involvement to Permanence" will be presented by Jennifer Freeman and Larissa Spell-Berger from the Mecklenburg County DSS. • The National Association of Retired Federal Employees will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Firebonz All American Barbecue and Grill, 2445 Cherry Road, Rock Hill. • The Catawba River Art Guild will meet at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Arts Council of York County, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill. The program will be "I Can't Draw; Can I Still Paint?" by local artist Marcia Kort Buike. Buike will demonstrate techniques for transferring images onto paper, canvas or walls. -Summer meal program begins on Monday

Free summer meals are available to all Rock Hill children ages 18 and younger from Monday through Aug. 15 as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program. The program brings healthy lunches to children in need. To find a lunch site call 909-7511.

Senior expo planned at York church

The 2008 Western York County Senior Expo will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 24 at Filbert Presbyterian Church, 2066 Filbert Highway, York. The expo invites seniors, caregivers and health professionals to view products, benefits and services available to the elderly in York County.

Free health services, screenings and information will be provided. Admission, food and beverages are free. There will be entertainment and door prizes. The Greater York Chamber of Commerce with the Greater Clover Chamber of Commerce and Individuals Caring for the Elderly are sponsoring the event.

York soup kitchen is open twice a week

Grace and Mercy Kitchen Ministry will have its soup kitchen open from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays each week at Wesley United Methodist Church, 110 W. Jefferson St., York. Volunteers are needed. For details or to volunteer, call Bunny Wells at (803) 628-1660.

Hospice programs include Father's Day brunch

Hospice and Community Care, 2275 India Hook Road, Rock Hill, will have the following events:

• Inaugural Father's Day brunch from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. The event will memorialize the loss of fathers and is open to Hospice families and the public. Registration is required by Monday. For details, call a bereavement counselor at 329-1500.

• Volunteer training from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 21. Positions include knitting prayer shawls for patients, helping during community events, clerical work, assisting with children's programs, patient companionship and more. For details, call the volunteer department at 329-1500.

Sterling House seminars planned on music, more

The Sterling House of Rock Hill, 1920 Ebenezer Road, Rock Hill, will have the following events:

• An educational seminar about benefits and resources for seniors at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Margaret Hollis, benefits consultant for Senior Solutions will discuss the Advantage Plan and answer questions.

• Move to the Music, about the benefits of movement and music, 6 p.m. June 19. Guest speaker will be Stephanie Campbell of Total Care Home Health.

Support groups help with mental illness, more

The following will meet:

• The National Alliance on Mental Illness will have support group meetings from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, 421 Oakland Ave., Rock Hill. Parents of children and teens will meet in the education building, room 202. Child care is available in the nursery. The adult support group will meet in the Hut. A NAMI general meeting will be from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Hut. Judge John Gettys will discuss the judicial system and mental illness. • A caregiver support group will meet from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, 2868 Gaston Farm Road, Richburg. Agape Hospice is sponsoring the group. Caregivers will talk about caring and coping and can share ideas, joys and challenges. The group meets the second Thursday of each month.
