Charlotte girl dies in I-77 crash

- Kimberly Dick

A Charlotte girl returning from a Florida vacation died after a two-car wreck Thursday morning on Interstate 77, authorities said.

Anjahreca Layne, 9, died at Piedmont Medical Center after the two-car crash near Exit 83, said York County Deputy Coroner Ev Amick.

Anjahreca, her sister and two other children had been in Florida since last week and were heading back to Charlotte with a neighbor, Amick said. As their vehicle began to sputter, the driver tried to get in the emergency lane when another vehicle struck it.

The crash occurred in the northbound lanes of I-77 near mile marker 84. Anjahreca was in a car driven by Sylvia Cuffie, 43, of Florida. Their vehicle was stopped for an unknown reason when another vehicle struck it, Lance Cpl. Jeff Gaskin said. The cause of collision remains under investigation.

The second vehicle was driven by Kenneth Earley of Rock Hill. Earley was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he was listed in fair condition Thursday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Cuffie and three other passengers in the vehicle were taken to Piedmont Medical Center. Their conditions were not available Thursday.

Traffic was slowed after the 5:35 a.m. crash and at one point was stopped in both directions.
