Eagles' Smith earns academic golf honor

- Staff Reports

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. -- Winthrop junior golfer Rachel Smith has been named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team for Division I.

Smith, the daughter of Robert and Ann Smith of Mansfield, Texas, has compiled a 3.716 grade point average during her first two years on Winthrop coach Jodi Wend's team. She has played as one of Wendt's top five players each of the past two seasons. The left-handed swinger is one of six women's golfers from the Big South Conference and is among 275 DI players who were named to the team.

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent of all college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of their schools' regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
