Charlton T. Howze

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. -- Charlton Townes Howze, 67, owner and manager of The Howze Mortuary, unexpectedly passed away Saturday, August 2, 2008, in Hendersonville, N.C.

Born in Chester, S.C., he was the son of the late James Charlton Howze and the late Effie Townes Howze. He was a graduate of Carlisle Military School and the Cincinnati College of Embalming. Mr. Howze has been a licensed Funeral Director/Embalmer for 45 years. He has owned The Howze Mortuary since 1972 when he and his wife Kathleen bought the business from James O'Dell. Since that time, he has diligently served the community he loved. For many years he has served on the Bank of Travelers Rest Advisory Board; in 1995, he was chosen to receive the National Service Award from the Rotary Club of the Foothills; from 1995 to 1998, he served on the South Carolina Funeral Service Board and in 2005, he was the South Carolina Funeral Directors Association, Piedmont Group Funeral Director of the Year. Mr. Howze has been a faithful member of Travelers Rest United Methodist Church for 36 years.

He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Kathleen Abell Howze; a daughter, Karen Howze McNamara and husband, John, of Summerville, S.C.; a son, John Russell Howze of San Francisco, Calif.; two granddaughters, Anna and Caroline McNamara, all of whom he loved and adored; along with many loving friends, family members and The Staff of The Howze Mortuary.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Wednesday at The Howze Mortuary Chapel in Travelers Rest. A private burial will follow at Travelers Rest United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family requests that Funeral Directors serve as Honorary Pallbearers.

Mr. Howze will lie in state from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at The Howze Mortuary.

The Howze family will receive friends from 4 until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.

The family will be at the home.
