HICKORY GROVE -- Keith Harris' death was terrible enough.
But for his family, the 7-year-old's fatal four-wheeler wreck is yet another blow to people who have already endured unspeakable suffering.
"This is another tragedy for us," said Becky Byrum, Keith's great-great-aunt.
Byrum's son died in a car crash in 2004. The following year, Keith's father, Boyd Reinhardt, killed his wife's stepfather and later took his own life.
Then came Monday, when Keith went to visit Byrum's husband and granddaughter.
Byrum said she didn't know Keith had not gotten permission to drive his four-wheeler to her home, which was near his on Scenic View Road.
"He was a little boy," she said. "And little boys are gonna do stuff like that."
Around 3:40 p.m., Keith was leaving Byrum's home when the accident happened.
Authorities said Keith drove down Byrum's driveway, getting to Scenic View Road at the same time a pulpwood truck was passing by.
The ATV collided with the tractor-trailer.
Byrum said she heard the crash and looked out the window. She saw Keith lying in the road and yelled for her husband, Ernest "Junior" Byrum, the man Keith called "Unc."
Ernest Byrum stayed with Keith until rescue workers arrived. Keith, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene.
The S.C. Highway Patrol hasn't charged anyone in the crash.
"I can't understand what happened," Becky Byrum said.
Keith would have been a first-grader this fall at Hickory Grove/Sharon Elementary School.
Becky Byrum said Keith often rode dirt bikes and four-wheelers.
"He was just all boy," she said. "He said he loved to ride."
Keith had a reputation for being strong. When he was 4, his soccer coach nicknamed him "Bulldog" because he played so hard.
"He was a tough little fella," she said. "He's like an old Timex. He took a lickin' and kept on tickin'."
Keith's last name became Harris after his mother remarried and his stepfather adopted him and his 4-year-old sister, Madison.
Although students are out on summer break, counselors will be available at the Hickory Grove/Sharon Elementary School this week.
Keith's funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Unity Baptist Church in Hickory Grove.
