CLOVER -- A 20-year-old Clover man died Saturday in a single-vehicle accident that also left a Lake Wylie man hospitalized, officials said.
Travis James Pettus, 20, died in the 3 a.m. wreck along Ridge Road, York County interim coroner Sabrina Gast said.
The driver, Jason T. Isbell, 20, of Lake Wylie was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The wreck happened as Isbell traveled east in a 1997 Jeep Cherokee along Ridge Road in Clover. The Jeep ran off the right side of the road, struck some trees and overturned, said Cpl. Jeff Gaston of the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Pettus, who did not wear a seat belt, died at the scene, Gast said.
Isbell, who also did not wear a seat belt, was trapped in the vehicle, Gaston said.
The wreck remains under investigation.
More than 740 people have died in accidents on South Carolina roads so far this year, according to the Office of Public Safety. Last year, 901 people had died on state roads during the same period.
