It's time once again to take a trip to ChristmasVille.
Beginning today and continuing through Sunday, Rock Hill residents and visitors can immerse themselves in the spirit of the season in downtown Rock Hill. Attendees will have more than 90 events to choose from, and many of them are free.
The festivities begin 6 p.m. tonight with singing, dancing and entertainment, culminating in the "Lighting of the Village." This year, by the way, a giant projection screen has been mounted above the stage so that everyone will be able to see the ceremony.
That is just the start of an event-filled four days, featuring the annual Rock Hill Christmas Parade, an outdoor movie, a chili and Brunswick stew cookoff, caroling, an art auction, a parade of dogs dressed in holiday attire and a grand finale featuring a choreographed performance by the Winthrop RockHettes.
This is the third year of this festival, and it is likely to be a defining one. At a time when money is short for many and the economy is bleak, ChristmasVille offers a community event with plenty of free activities and an opportunity to put aside our cares for a while and enjoy the holiday atmosphere.
Candy Randall, the city's downtown development manager, said organizers have worked out many of the kinks involved in putting on a downtown festival over its three years. The celebration has continued to improve each year.
As always, the figures created by much beloved illustrator, the late Vernon Grant, will be evident throughout ChristmasVille. When it comes to getting into the holiday spirit, Grant's work is great inspiration.
We're grateful to the city and all those who worked hard to bring ChristmasVille to life. The event is sure to be fun for all.
