Boys' basketball roundup: Stallions blow past region foe Blythewood

South Pointe exploded for 43 second-half points to dispose of Region 4-AAAA foe Blythewood, 66-49. Tre Erby scored 13 of his game-high 18 points in the second half to lead the Stallions.

The Stallions will host Clover at 6:30 p.m. today in a game that was originally scheduled for December, the night the Stallions won the Class AAAA Division II state football title.

Blythewood (3-10, 0-2) dictated the tempo in the first 13 minutes. The Bengals played a deliberate pace and held Erby to just five points and four shots in the first half.

South Pointe closed the half on a 9-2 run that included a 3-pointer from Diami Gilmore.

The first half included an oddity.

A Blythewood player checked into the game but was sent back to the bench because he had a shirt on under his jersey that was not allowed. The player obeyed, sat in a seat, removed his under shirt and pulled on his jersey.

The player was called for a technical foul for undressing on the bench.

South Pointe got the second started with a 13-4 run. Charles Holmes ignited the rally with a three-point play and finished off a fast break during the run. Holmes scored nine points on the night.

Jamar Banks scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter for the Stallions. He tallied seven straight points in one late-game stretch.

Blythewood coach Mark Greiner said South Pointe controlled the second half.

"They pulled us out of our zone after the half. We have size limitations and they took advantage of that. We got beat by a better team," Greiner said.

South Pointe went into the season knowing they'd be without Stephon Gilmore, Devin Wherry and Jadeveon Clowney. But they still have plenty of horses in the barn.

Stallions coach Dwayne Hartsoe has his team off to a 9-3 start. The win Friday evened the team's region record at 1-1.

"We created some turnovers and got the pace where we wanted it. We played well in the second half," Hartsoe said.

--ROCK HILL 62 LANCASTER 50 -- Rock Hill picked up a huge Region 4-AAAA win over the visiting Lancaster Bruins getting 14 points from Xavier McFadden.

Rock Hill pulled away from Lancaster with a 10-0 run in the second quarter. The Bearcats never relinquished the lead despite a couple of Bruins surges in the second half.

Rock Hill used a 1-3-1 defense to hold the Bruins in check for most of the game. Point guard Dominic Cathcart was held scoreless in the opening half, but came alive late and ended the game with 11 points.

Each time Lancaster began to make a run at the Bearcats, Cathcart was there to answer with a composed jump shot or a pass down low for an easy bucket from Bearcat forward Colby Niven.

Niven ended the night with eight points and had several key defensive stops as the front man on the Rock Hill full-court press.

Rock Hill built a double digit lead only to see Lancaster draw to within five points midway through the final period, when the Bearcats salted the game away with free throws.

"We came out tonight and really responded well with our backs to the wall," Rock Hill coach Bobby Stevens said. "I thought that our defense was excellent and we hit our free throws down the stretch, which was huge."

-- FORT MILL 79, YORK 67 -- In Fort Mill, coaches preach taking care of the ball and sharing the ball. The Fort Mill Yellow Jackets boys obviously got the message. Seven players scored at least seven points in their 79-67 win over the York Cougars Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets forced the Cougars into nine first quarter turnovers, but only led 22-19 at the end of the period because they turned it over six times themselves.

The second quarter was where Fort Mill's pressure defense began to pay dividends. It helped fuel an 11-0 run for the Yellow Jackets as the Cougars turnovers led to a number of easy baskets for Fort Mill. The run helped stretch their lead to 43-29 at the half.

The Cougars really struggled in the third quarter as Fort Mill continued to press. York found very few open shots against Fort Mill's half-court defense. Meanwhile the Yellow Jackets continued to have easy transition opportunities. Rashawn Dupree, who led Fort Mill with 16 points, had 9 in the quarter to help the Jackets lead 65-39 at the end of three.

York tried to make a furious rally in the fourth, but the Cougars never got closer than 11. Jerry Holmes led all scorers with 17.

"Our pressure wore them (York) down. We had three good days of practice. We played 10 or 12 guys and whoever gets it can score," Fort Mill coach Bailey Jackson said.

"We put ourselves in a hole and we couldn't get out of it. We have four sophomores who have little experience handling the ball. Our team tends to play harder once they get down," York coach Kendall McCarter said.

-- CHESTER 55, CHAPIN 40 -- In Chester, at 5-3, Darren Williams is the smallest player on the Cyclones' roster.

But the freshman point guard came up big for Chester on Friday.

Williams ignited the Cyclones offensively and defensively, leading Chester to a win over Chapin in Region 4-AAA action.

Whether it was sinking a key jumper, setting up a teammate for a score, or picking off a steal, Williams came through. He scored 22 points, including three 3-pointers, and came up with five steals, including three during a crucial defensive stretch in the fourth quarter when Chester was able to put the game out of reach.

"Coach (Jason Smith) wanted me to run the offense better," Williams said describing the team's halftime conversation.

"So after opening the contest with two 3-pointers, Williams settled into the role of a playmaker.

With the game tied at 21 at the half, the Cyclones took the lead when James Gallman scored on a short jumper. Chapin regained the edge, 26-25, but Chester seized control with a 15-6 run, ignited when center Fred Lee stole a pass and found guard Julius Pendergrass in transiton. Pendergrass then found Williams for the layup underneath.
