Let's get cooking with March of Dimes

The March of Dimes present the 19th annual Look Who's Cookin' event form 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Baxter Hood Center. This year's theme is "Island Thyme". Cooks will be decorating their area based on the food being cooked. There are first and second place trophies for best decoration. Cooks will be competing for first and second place in the amateur and professional cooking contest. The public is invited to sample more than 30 dishes, participate in a live and silent auction and much more. Tickets are available at the door or at all Fort Mill and Rock Hill Burger King restaurants, March of Dimes or Hair by Stan and Company. Tickets are $40 in advance and $50 at the door.

Warming centers open during rough weather

• The Salvation Army homeless men's Warming Center opens when temperatures drop below 38 degrees. The center provides men with a warm and safe place to sleep and a meal for the night. The Salvation Army's doors open at 5:30 p.m. at their Charlotte Avenue office in Rock Hill. Volunteers provide the nightly meals and easy-to-carry snacks for the men when they leave the next morning. The center is in need of small toiletry items, towels, paper products and small food items or easy-to-carry snacks. Those interested in helping can call The Salvation Army at 803-324-5141.

• The Warming Center for women is located at Pilgrims' Inn on Main Street in Rock Hill. The Women's Warming Center is opened every night until Feb. 1, regardless of temperature, and provides safe shelter for women and children and a meal each night. Volunteers providing meals, blankets and toiletries would be appreciated. Those interested in helping can call Pilgrims' Inn at 803-327-4227.

Fundraisers planned around the area

• The Second Annual Super Bowl Fundraiser is set for Feb. 1 at the City Hall Amphitheater in downtown Rock Hill. The party starts at 6 p.m. and benefits The Haven Men's Shelter. The cost is a $50 donation per person and includes a meal of gumbo, pizza, salad, dessert, beer, wine, hot chocolate and soft drinks plus a silent auction and giant screen TV to watch the game. Auction prizes include dinners, art, golf passes, a mountain house and more. Tickets can be reserved in advance by calling Mary Frances Morton at 803-985-4014. Tickets will be sold on site.

• A dinner for Hudson Miller will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Magnolia Room at Laurel Creek. Miller was recently diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Dinner will be catered by Dominque's Delights. For details, call Kathi Ross at 803-242-3058 or e-mail kross@rock-hill.k12.sc.us.

• The Friends of the York County Library will host a book sale Thursday and Friday at the Pope John Center at the Oratory, 434 Charlotte Ave., Rock Hill.

The preview night for Friends members will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memberships will be sold at the door beginning at $10 for individuals and $25 for families.

The sale will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Thousands of books for adults and children will be for sale, priced at $1 per inch, measuring the height of the book stack. Videos, audio books and surplus library equipment will also be for sale at bargain prices. On Saturday, books will be sold at 50 cents per inch.

World Changers Project taking applications

The Housing Development Corp. of Rock Hill is accepting applications for the 2009 World Changers Project from low income, disabled or elderly residents. Applications will be accepted until March 20 and may be obtained through the Housing and Neighborhood Services Department at 150 Johnston St., Rock Hill.

To be eligible to apply, homes must be owner occupied and located in the city limits of Rock Hill; property taxes must be paid and current; and the applicant must meet HUD income limits. Recipients will be required to sign a deferred, forgivable loan for building materials.
