Casino night will benefit Resource Center

The York County Medical Society Alliance will have a casino night fundraiser to benefit the Rock Hill Family Resource Center from 7 to 11 p.m. Friday.

The black-tie optional event will be in the Magnolia Room at Laurel Creek in Rock Hill. The event will include food, with the catering provided by Melanie Rowe, an open bar, gambling, a silent auction and live entertainment.

Admission is $35 per person, available at the door. The resource center is a free pediatric clinic. For more information, contact Rhea Hsu at (803) 524-3198.

Tickets available for Look Who's Cookin'

The local March of Dimes will present its 19th annual Look Who's Cookin' benefit from 7 to 11 p.m. Feb. 28 at the Baxter Hood Center at York Technical College in Rock Hill.

The event, which will have an island theme, will include more than 30 dishes prepared by local "celebrity" cooks and an open bar. It also will include live and silent auctions, entertainment and dancing.

Tickets are $40 in advance -- available from all Rock Hill and Fort Mill Burger King restaurants, the March of Dimes and Hair by Stan and Co. -- and $50 at the door.

Historic Rock Hill publishes local history

Historic Rock Hill has published "Along the Land's Ford Road, a history of the antebellum village of Rock Hill, South Carolina, 1850 to 1860," volumes one and two, by William B. White Jr.

Volume one focuses on the development of Rock Hill's early roads, schools, the coming of the railroad and early families that helped shape the town's development. Volume two contains a brief genealogical sketch of 100 families who lived in or near Rock Hill before 1900.

White, a former Rock Hill resident and teacher, is the author of several books on local history. He served as organist at First Presbyterian and St. John's United Methodist churches, both in Rock Hill, and at First Presbyterian Church in York. He lives in Roanoke, Va.

NAACP, others plan black history events

Hermon Presbyterian Church will sponsor an African-American art and artifacts exhibit commemorating Black History Month in conjunction with a meeting of the Rock Hill NAACP at 6 p.m. Sunday.

The church was the home of the NAACP during the civil rights movement. The late Rev. C.A. Ivory, former pastor of Hermon, was president of the Rock Hill branch.

The exhibit, which will consist of original paintings, prints, sculpture, books and collectibles contributed by members, will be open to the public from 2 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

A reception honoring the Rock Hill NAACP will be at 5:30 p.m. at the church, 107 Heckle Blvd., Rock Hill. For details, contact Dot Killian at (803) 517-7870 or e-mail dot@providencepres.org.

• TLC Ministries will host a black history program at 3 p.m. Sunday at 641 Annafrel St., Rock Hill. The guest speaker will be Clarence Graham, a member of the Friendship Nine. Details, call 803-324-1594.

• The South Carolina Alliance of Black School Educators and the Real Link Mentoring Program of Northwestern will host its annual historically black college and university fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Northwestern High School, Rock Hill. Registration begins at 9:15 a.m. in the auditorium. All eighth- to 12th-grade students are invited. Seniors must bring multiple copies of their transcript. Lunch and door prizes will be provided. There will be workshops with information on financial aid, money management, ACT/SAT preparation and middle to high school transitions. This event is free. • Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church will hold its Black History Month observance at 10 a.m. Sunday. The church is at 302 California St., York. Everyone is encouraged to wear African attire.
