A Rock Hill businessman has been inducted into the Subway restaurant chain’s hall of fame for his success operating franchises in South Carolina.
Vance Houston, 72, started with two Subway restaurants in Rock Hill and now has 12 franchises in York, Chesterfield and Lancaster counties, according to a news release from the company.
Houston, a Charlotte native, was unemployed after spending 25 years working in the textile business when he opened his first Subway restaurant on Cherry Road in 1987. After six months, sales at the restaurant ranked it among the top Subways in the nation, according to the news release. Houston later opened franchises on Herlong Avenue and East Main Street, among others.
Houston was named the York County Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Small Businessperson of the Year in 1999.
