Black History Month begins today, and York County colleges and other local venues are offering a series of related public events, including music, art, speakers, an African festival and more. Winthrop University’s observance, called More Than a Month, encompases various cultures and continues with more events in March and April.
Here’s a roundup of what’s going on:
York Technical College
7 p.m. Tuesday, a musical celebration of black history at the Baxter Hood Center at York Technical College in Rock Hill. The free event will be hosted by local musician Bobby Plair and presented by York Technical College Student Activities.
Winthrop University
11 a.m. to noon Tuesday, “The Implications of Race and Place on Health,” Kinard building room 18.
2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, “I am Forever: A 5th Generation Descendant of Historic Brattonsville's Enslaved Africans Speak,” Kinard building room 18.
8 to 10 p.m. Saturday, “A Memory, a Monologue, a Rant and a Prayer/Congo Teach-In,” Johnson Theatre.
4 to 6 p.m. Feb. 7, Black Week 2010: Gospel Extravaganza, Tillman Auditorium.
8 p.m. Feb. 11, Jazz Night: A Night of Crimson Elegance, Student Activity Center.
8 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 19, Mellogroove, Dinkins Student Center – ATS Café. Admission, $5 with Winthrop ID, $10 general admission.
8 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 22 “Do You Have Good Hair?” Owens Hall G01.
8 to 9:30 p.m. Feb. 26, Sekou Tha Misfit, Dinkins Student Center – the Underground Lounge. Admission, $5 with Winthrop ID, $10 general admission.
Clinton Junior College
Feb. 23., mixed media artist Mac Arthur Goodwin’s arts talk and reception starts at 6:30 p.m. in Clinton Junior College’s Dalton Gallery, 1029 Crawford Road, Rock Hill.
Goodwin’s show, “People I have Met Along the Way,” is on exhibit in the gallery through March 15. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays. Free.
York County Culture and Heritage Museum
10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 27, Africa Alive! Celebrate African life, culture and history from the motherland to the shores of America through music, storytelling, crafts, hands-on activities and planetarium programs. Shop in the African Marketplace and enjoy food. Museum of York County, 4621 Mount Gallant Road, Rock Hill. Admission: $6 adults, $5 seniors, $4 youth ages 4-17, and children 3 and younger free. CHM Members receive $2 discount
