Two area players selected for North-South game

The North-South All-Star Basketball Game rosters have been announced and two local players were chosen.

York’s Erika Sanders and Northwestern’s Amber Stewart were selected to the North girls team. York’s Paula Blackwell was named an assistant coach. No boys’ players were chosen.

The games will be held on March 20 at North Myrtle Beach High School. The girls game starts at 11:30 a.m., with the boys game at 2 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased ahead of time at any BI-LO store. Advance tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students. On the day of the game, tickets can be purchased at North Myrtle Beach High School for $10 for adults and $5 for students.

PRESEASON: Monday was the official first day for the spring sports season in South Carolina, but several area teams participated in preseason tournaments.

Clover’s baseball team won the Chester County Natural Gas Preseason Tournament by defeating Blacksburg (7-2), Chester (6-1), Indian Land (17-1) and Lancaster (3-2) in advancing to the championship game.

Once there, the Blue Eagles ran their record to 5-0 with a 9-8 win over Region 3-AAAA foe in the championship game (9-8). Clover’s Travis Heffner was the MVP and Hayden Hendry and Kris Thompson made the All-Tournament team. Fort Mill went 4-1.

Rock Hill’s baseball team played in the Tournament of Horns at Mauldin High School and came away with a 5-0 record and the championship. Jesse Brewer pitched a complete game shutout in the final. It was the second straight year the Bearcats opened with a preseason tournament championship.

At the York Jamboree, teams played six one-inning mini games where each team played a total of four innings. Northwestern was 2-0-2, York 1-0-3 and South Pointe 0-3-1.

In boys’ soccer, Lancaster beat Indian Land 2-1 on penalty kicks in the championship game a four-team preseason tournament of Lancaster County squads.

Lancaster also beat Buford 4-0 and Andrew Jackson 5-2. Indian Land beat Andrew Jackson 4-3 on penalty kicks.
