Something rocking this way comes tonight

12:00am on Aug 13, 2010

Pay no attention to fears and phobias this Friday the 13th.

In spite of heat, haze, humidity, even a meteor shower, something rocking this way comes with Mack Fowler and Company live tonight at The Money in Rock Hill.

Fortune smiles with the return of this rocking ensemble led by guitarist Mack Fowler who points to late 60's/ early 70's classic rock as the main source of musical inspiration where his guitar finesse is concerned. Band-wise the aim is simple: stripped-down rock power -- no fussy frills but lots of thrills.

"It's the classic sound with a blues-based slant and a bit of Brit rock," Fowler says, citing Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith and the James Gang as examples.

Out of action for nearly eight months, Fowler and band return now, boasting not only a new lineup and song list changes plus also a fresh energetic perspective. Joining guitarist/songwriter Fowler, and drummer Dutch Adkins, meet two newcomers: Danny Austin, bass; and Russ Carroll, vocals.

"This is the first time performing with the new lineup," Fowler admits. "We're rolling out the new, improved model. I'm excited with the sound," he continues, calling it "melodic, potent and definitely more soulful."

Fine-tuning the sound also meant tweaking the song list. Look for old favorites, some new originals plus a few favorite covers. Unchanged is the band's "a good time party atmosphere" and penchant for music that's hook-filled and spirited that he defines as "new classic rock with groove, great tone, emotion and a guitar solo here and there."

All that remains is the big reveal.

"We want fans and friends to come see us, meet the new guys, hear the difference, and," Fowler adds, "have a foot-stomping good time."

Hot fun in the summertime with Mack Fowler and Company, tonight at The Money, 110 S. Cherry Road, Rock Hill. Call 803-329-2710. For more on the band and music, visit mackfowler.com and myspace.com/mackfowlermusic.

It's "Americana, jam, even Southern-fried Grateful Dead" to some folks but to the Papa String Band, live this Saturday at the Sylvia Theater, York, it's just "funky/newgrass/honk."

From traditional bluegrass to contemporary improv jamming, the duo of Daron LaBruyere and Brett Mello use unconventional instrumentation to create an "ever-changing, spontaneous, and unpredictable sensory experience."

More simply put, "Daron and Brett just can't stop popping strings" thus explaining both the band's name and musical style in one fell swoop.

Music for all ages, heavily influenced by the Grateful Dead, Newgrass Revival, Bela Fleck and The Flecktones, Railroad Earth, Simon and Garfunkel, even The Beatles, Allman Brothers, and more, that "leaves fans with a smile on their face" from the Papa String Band, live this Saturday at the Sylvia Theater, 27 N. Congress St., downtown York. Check sylviatheater.com or call 803-684-5590 for show information. For more on the music check papastringband.com and myspace.com/thepapastringband.

Mixing '70s classics and '80s hits with unique new material, even cover tunes, Heart -- live this Sunday at Road Runner Mobile Amphitheater in Charlotte -- are as stunning, talented, relevant, and groundbreaking today as they were in the beginning of their career more than 35 years ago.

Together, the Wilson Sisters -- Ann and Nancy -- have charted numerous hits including classics "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Little Queen," and the awesomely acerbic "Barracuda" in the 70's. In the 80's their sound morphed into a harder more commercial sound that produced hits "What About Love?," "Never," "These Dreams," "Nothin' at All," No. 1 hit "Alone," and so much more.

A variety of releases in the 90's, as well as a couple of greatest hits compilations, added to their winning song streak, along with acoustic sets, co-op projects, and solo ventures.

Now, the Wilson Sisters have reissued a live version of their debut album, and their newest album, "Red Velvet Car," is touted as powerfully stunning and show a renewed purpose for the band.

Mind-boggling music "riding on the diamond waves" from Ann and Nancy Wilson -- Heart -- live this Sunday at Road Runner Mobile Amphitheater-NC Music Factory, 820 Hamilton St., uptown Charlotte. For more info, call 704-549-5555 or visit livenation.com for ticket details. For more on the music, check heart-music.com.
