Lancaster man charged in convenience store robbery

--

Police have charged a Lancaster man in a convenience store armed robbery after a homeowner disarmed the same man during a robbery attempt.

Carlis Wayne Oliver Jr., 35, of Lancaster was charged with armed robbery Tuesday in connection with a convenience store hold-up in August.

Oliver was arrested after a home invasion Sunday where the homeowner fought back, being grazed by a bullet as he and other men disarmed the invader trying to rob them, authorities say.

Oliver is accused of bringing a gun to an Abbey Court residence in Lancaster and demanding money on Sunday, according to a release from the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office. At home with the homeowner, 31, were several other adults and children.

The victim was able to convince Oliver he had money in his vehicle outside. When they got outside, the victim and other men fought with Oliver, disarming him and subduing him until officers arrived.

During the attack, Oliver fired a weapon several times, striking the homeowner with a bullet in the chest area. The homeowner was treated at Springs Memorial Hospital and released.

Oliver was treated and released for injuries, including a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the left forearm, according to the release.

Oliver faces charges of burglary, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during a violent crime.

After being arrested, Oliver was identified as a suspect in an August armed robbery at Fork's convenience store from security camera footage from the store.

In that incident, a man armed with what appeared to be a chrome revolver robbed the Fork's convenience store on Memorial Park Road in Lancaster around 5:20 a.m. Aug. 7, the release states.

When the suspect demanded cash from the register, the clerk opened the register and the suspect removed the cash and left the store, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Several customers were in the store during the robbery, and one customer followed the suspect across Grace Avenue and up Carter Street, but lost sight of the suspect.

Lancaster County deputies and investigators and the State Law Enforcement Division responded to the call, and SLED deployed a tracking dog but could not locate the suspect.

The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office has been investigating the robbery for the past couple of weeks.

"Because the store had such good video, we were able to see the suspect clearly," Sheriff Barry Faile said. "We caught a break in the arrest from another case and put all the pieces together to get this case cleared and another violent criminal behind bars."

Oliver is being held at the Lancaster County Detention Center where his bond has been denied.
