Eagles outrebounded 46-28 by athletic, speedy Flyers

Despite double-digit scoring from three Eagles, Winthrop fell 73-58 to the University of Dayton Flyers in front of 11,974 fans Monday night at UD Arena.

Charles Corbin, Robbie Dreher and Reggie Middleton all scored in double figures for the Eagles, but it wasn't enough to down an athletic Dayton Flyers squad.

The Flyers dominated on the offensive and defensive glass, outrebounding Winthrop 46-28. Of the 46 rebounds collected by Dayton on the night, 22 of them came on the offensive side of the ball.

After the game, Winthrop coach Randy Peele acknowledged the importance of winning the rebounding battle against quality opponents. "If you can rebound even, you've got a chance to win," said Peele. "If you can out-rebound you've really got a chance, but if you don't rebound even with high-major schools you're going to struggle."

The Flyers are a team that normally struggles shooting the ball, but Dayton was able to slice through the Eagles' defense and convert a number opportunities around the hoop.

Winthrop struggled to keep up with Dayton's frantic pace of play. Led by point guards Juwan Staten and Josh Parker, the Flyers pushed the ball nearly every trip down the floor.

Peele pointed to his team's defensive effort for allowing Dayton to get out and run. "We didn't make them work defensively," said Peele. "When you take quick shots you put yourself in defensive transition and that's what we did, so we've just got to be a little bit more deliberate in the half-court."

Despite being outplayed for a majority of the game, the Eagles looked poised to climb back into the game midway through the second half. Middleton knocked down a three-pointer in transition for Winthrop, cutting Dayton's lead to just eight points. That would be as close as the Eagles would get.

After a time out from Dayton coach Brian Gregory, the Flyers used a 7-1 run to put the Eagles away for good.

Corbin led the way for the Eagles, scoring a season-high 18 points to go along with six rebounds. Dreher added 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field.

The Flyers were led offensively by junior Chris Johnson who had 16 points and eight rebounds. Staten, a freshman recently named as a candidate for the 2011 Bob Cousy Award for the nation's top point guard, came up just short of his second career double-double with 9 points to go along with 9 assists.

UD Arena continues to be a house of horrors for the Winthrop Eagles. Monday marked the fourth time Winthrop has played at the historic arena in southwestern Ohio. The Eagles have never won at this venue, including their two appearances in the NCAA play-in game.

The loss drops the Eagles to 5-6 on the season. Winthrop now has one day to rest before heading for a show down with the nationally ranked Kentucky Wildcats in Lexington on Wednesday.
