Encountering the band Evelynn Rose, tonight at McHale's On Main in Rock Hill, might present a dichotomy to those unfamiliar with this group. By the name, you might be expecting a fancy, perhaps slightly old-fashioned or whimsical female-fronted or all-girl group. Guess again.
Even song titles like "Everyone Knows" "Off The Wagon" "Whiskey Woman" "Someone New" and "Like Royalty," are deceptive. But any sound sampling, along with a good gander at this Charlotte-based bunch, quickly tells the true tale. The feisty foursome - Joseph William, vocals/guitar; Mike Hawk, drums; Joshua Wade, bass; and Chris Black, lead guitar - are actually brazen rockers hellbent on heavy-handed Southern guitar-driven "boozen" blues.
Together since 2008, Evelynn Rose plays rock with an edge plus a glancing blow of Americana but mostly downright hard and heavy meets bluesy for that sort of sound that'll play tricks on your mind. There's more than a welcome bit of Black Crowes here, maybe some Avett Brothers added to an update of an Allman and Skynyrd stance, but vocally - especially in the song "Everyone Knows" there's more than a dash of Danzig crossed with The Cult. What we have here is spirited, temperamental, moody magic in music, and surely more rock revelations from Evelynn Rose, tonight at McHale's On Main, 122 East Main Street in downtown Rock Hill.
