BLYTHEWOOD — Cross Richland Two Stadium off the list of potential future Lancaster playing dates. The house of horrors just off Interstate 77 kicked the Bruins in the teeth for the second straight week.
Lancaster (3-3) lost a 21-14 lead with just less than three minutes to play in regulation, then couldn't equal a 24-21 Blythewood advantage in double overtime and lost. Strange plays and ill-timed penalties knocked the Bruins out of a win they could have had.
Brandon Reese's 46-yard field-goal attempt was well short after the Bruins tried to tie or win the game. In the drive before, Shaq Williams was twice brought down for a combined 9 yards, and Lancaster was flagged on back-to-back plays. Williams threw for 67 yards and rushed for 48, but Lancaster only got one offensive touchdown, while its special teams and defense got the other two.
Trying to make a 21-14 lead last in the fourth quarter, Lancaster thought it had the game won when Blythewood quarterback Demetric Gray hit Jeff Langston on a screen pass and he fumbled for the second time of the game. The Bruins recovered, but the play was ruled incomplete, sending Lancaster coach Bennie McMurray into a fit on the sideline.
Gray rushed for a first down on fourth-and-5, then punched in the tying touchdown. In overtime, Williams' stretch for the goal line was ruled just short, and a Lancaster fumble recovery only became the extension of the game.
The Bengals' Greg Huegel converted the game-winning 40-yard field goal, and the Blythewood defense shut Lancaster down on its final attempt.
Quinshun Evans had a 3-yard return off a blocked punt for a touchdown, and Shaq Elder returned an interception 11 yards for another TD. Michael Cooper caught a 39-yard pass from Williams for the other score.
