Nation Ford wins first region game in 3 years

Herald correspondentOctober 1, 2011

— The monkey is finally off their back.

Just like Indiana Jones searching for that elusive artifact, the Nation Ford Falcons have been searching for their first region win in football for the past three seasons.

They got that win, beating Fairfield Central 21-20 in overtime Friday night.

It took some extra football to get the job done.

In overtime, Nation Ford scored on two plays as senior quarterback Cameron Wells hit senior Andrew Komornik for an 11-yard touchdown in the back of the end zone.

Fairfield Central came right back and scored on four plays, but Nation Ford's defense stopped a two-point conversion that would have given the Griffins the win by forcing a fumble.

"We made some big plays," said Falcons head coach Michael Allen. "The kids fought hard. It feels good to get a region win. It's a monkey off the program's back. The kids did it."

Nation Ford was led by junior Daniel Jackson, who rushed for 99 yards on 28 carries and a touchdown.

The Griffins tied the game with less than 10 seconds left in the third quarter as quarterback NaJahwan McKinstry hit Dana Macklin on a 27-yard touchdown.

Fairfield Central played better in the second half, as it picked up 10 first downs, while Nation Ford was penalized five times for 30 yards.

Nation Ford held Fairfield Central to just 19 rushing yards on 14 carries in the first half, and had McKinstry scrambling with blitz after blitz. Total offense for Fairfield Central in the first half was just 62.

A bad punt to start the second quarter gave Nation Ford the ball at the Griffins' 34-yard line.

Jackson led the offense on the drive as he collected 28 of the 34 yards on the drive, before scoring on a one-yard drive for Nation Ford.

The Falcons' defense was as impressive as their offense, as Nation Ford held Fairfield Central to just one yard on two drives in the opening quarter.
