SPARTANBURG — The halftime show by South Carolina State's vaunted band provided the most excitement Friday during Spartanburg's easy 55-0 win over undermanned Clover.
In fact, the precision of the Vikings ground game with a number of different contributors mimicked the tight playing of the halftime entertainment in giving Clover's option offense a taste of its own medicine.
The Vikings (6-2) rushed 36 times for 204 yards while holding Clover's tricky Wing-T ground attack to 60 yards on 40 rushes. The Blue Eagles didn't complete a pass and even had one of their three attempts intercepted by Terry Stewart.
It was Spartanburg's first shutout since blanking Union County 35-0 in 2009. Clover (2-5) was playing without 10 veterans who recently were dismissed for their role in a hazing incident.
"That group from Clover and coach (John) Devine is just a class act," Spartanburg coach Freddie Brown said. "They've gone through some things this past week and our prayers go out to their kids and their community because it's a trying moment for them right now. They've got some young kids, and they played as hard as they could."
"They (Spartanburg) have a very fine football team, and we feel like we've got to do a better job getting our guys ready," Devine said. "We'll get better and improve. ... It's just part of the process. They're filling in and not giving up but just not executing very well."
