Defensive scores propel Great Falls

Herald correspondentOctober 15, 2011

All season long, Great Falls has struggled to overcome mistakes.

Fortunately for it, McBee made a few more, including two fumbles that the Red Devils returned for touchdowns. Those two scores proved to be the difference in Great Falls' 35-24 win Friday night.

Early on, it appeared that it was going to be the Ernest Talford show for Great Falls. He scored on runs of 4 and 53 yards, and on a 50-yard fumble return. For the game Talford had 100 yards on 9 carries and four touchdowns.

McBee's only score in the first quarter was an 80-yard kick off return by Rashad Reed. Reed scored three times overall for McBee, the other two on a 32-yard run and a 44-yard pass from J.C. Steen.

Great Falls got a 23-yard fumble return by Xavier Holmes and a Talford 6-yard run to grow the Red Devils' lead to 33-12 at the half.

The game became a defensive struggle after the half, as both teams tried to overcome penalties and turnovers. Both teams had over 100 yards in penalties. Great Falls was flagged 11 times for 109 yards and McBee 14 for 126 yards.

Great Falls had opportunities to pad itslead, but fumbled twice inside McBee's 10. After the second fumble, Great Falls tackled the Panthers running back in the end zone for a safety and stretched their lead to 35-18.

McBee scored on a 21-yard pass from Steen to Lewis Hart that made the score 35-24 with a minute left in the game. McBee's onside kick bounced out of bounds and Great Falls ran out the clock for the win.
