Wessinger helps lead Bearcats to win against Clover

Herald correspondentOctober 29, 2011

— It's clear Corey Wessinger will do anything for a shot at the postseason.

Rock Hill's quarterback returned from a concussion last week to help ignite the Bearcats' 28-7 victory against Clover with - of all things - a lead block on a reverse.

Wessinger's sell-out block cleared a path for Dre Williams for a 65-yard touchdown with 3:19 left in the second quarter. That triggered a runaway victory for Rock Hill (5-5, 1-3) in AAAA-Region 3 play at District Three Stadium.

The Bearcats have a chance to slip into the playoffs with a win against rival Northwestern next week.

"The coaches don't want me to get hurt but we're going to do whatever it takes to win," Wessinger said. "It's unacceptable for us to lose. We're tired of losing."

Clover (2-8, 0-4) and its Triple-option attack controlled the tempo early. The Blue Eagles ran 15 straight run plays between the first two quarters before Rock Hill forced a fourth-and-goal from the 1. Rock Hill's Mitchell Jeter stuffed Clover fullback Ryan Moore short of the goal line, however.

Clover's Benjamin Forbes intercepted Wessinger on a tipped pass two plays later, and Moore responded with a 1-yard touchdown for a 7-0 lead.

Clover's Desmond Wright recovered the ensuing onside kick, but Jeter forced a Blue Eagles fumble, which Bishop Ashley pounced on. Rock Hill parlayed that into a 22-yard touchdown run by Jonathan Adams. The Bearcats then forced a three-and-out, and Williams' reverse followed with 2:37 left in the half.

"We saved that play and executed it well," Rock Hill coach Joe Montgomery said. "It came at the right time."
