- nsmith@heraldonline.com

--

The city of Rock Hill has been announced as the host for the 2012 and 2013 USA Cycling International Omnium Track International Championship, an event for top riders to concentrate on the omnium, the newest addition to the Olympics.

The first event will take place Aug. 17 and 18.

The Giordana Velodrome as part of the larger Rock Hill Outdoor Center. Equipped with 42-degree embankments, the 250-meter cycling track was touted by city officials as a big attraction to the cycling world that would net national events.

Gita Sporting Goods, a Charlotte-based bicycle equipment distributor, agreed to pay for a decade after the track opens for the Giordana name and also plans to donate bicycles to the city for use at the center.

The velodrome will be part of the larger Rock Hill Outdoor Center, 250 acres' worth of trails, athletic complexes, a mountain bike course and BMX/Supercross and Cyclocross tracks at Riverwalk, located off Cherry Road near the Catawba River.
