One who carries the last name 'Brown' almost always inherits the nickname 'Downtown.'
Fort Mill's Jon Brown lived up to the billing against the Fairfield Central Griffins on Tuesday. Brown nailed four of the Yellow Jackets' nine 3-pointers in a 70-39 region win. Brown also led Fort Mill with 14 points.
"We played well offensively in the first quarter," Fort Mill coach Dwayne Hartsoe said. "When the ball goes in the hole it makes everything go better."
Daequon Antoine helped the Yellow Jackets build a 16-6 first-quarter lead with nine straight points. Brown and Devin Thacker nailed two 3-pointers apiece in the second quarter, increasing the lead to 38-23 at halftime.
Hartsoe said he was impressed with the team defense on Fairfield Central standout Na McKinstry, who was limited to 15 points on 5 of 17 shooting.
The defense delivered in the third quarter when Fort Mill held Fairfield Central to 2 of 16 shooting from the floor. That, combined with an 11-0 run highlighted by another 3-pointer by Brown, put the game away early. The Yellow Jackets meet South Pointe in a key region showdown Friday.
"We're right where we need to be halfway through region play," Hartsoe said.

South Pointe 64, Chester 47: Tuesday night could have been a trap game for South Pointe as the Stallions came in tied for first place against a Chester Cyclones team that was winless in Region 4-AAA.
However, coach Melvin Watson's young Stallions didn't let that happen as they opened each quarter of play with a focused flurry of points and left Chester with a convincing victory.
"This is an important week for my team with Fort Mill and Nation Ford coming up," Watson said.
South Pointe opened the game with a 6-0 spurt before the Cyclones called timeout. Also, at the end of the quarter and start of the second, the Stallions outscored Chester 8-2 to take a 21-17 lead.
Sophomore guard Anthony Johnson had six of his game-high 14 points during the burst, which he punctuated with an emphatic dunk on a run-out to force another Cyclones timeout.
"Anthony is active and he's a good player as a sophomore," Watson said. "He's a spark for us."
South Pointe continued its quarter-opening trend with a 6-0 start to the third and seven more unanswered to begin the final frame. Junior guard Cal Leslie hit a three in the middle of that run.
The Stallions host Fort Mill on Friday night.
"Friday is going to be a huge game," Watson said. "Fort Mill is always well-coached. He's (Fort Mill coach Dwayne Hartsoe) a guy I coached under. I learned a lot from him."
The Cyclones did not score until halfway through the first period when they hit two of their three three-pointers for the quarter on back-to-back possessions.
