--

A North Charleston man shot one of two gun-wielding burglars Wednesday morning, police said.

Leonard Nathaniel of Big Ben Court told police he as sleeping alone in his apartment when a neighbor called and alerted him to the thieves, said Spencer Pryor, spokesman for the North Charleston Police Department.

Nathaniel said he went downstairs and found two people going through his kitchen drawers and cabinets. He said a gun was pointed at him, and he fled upstairs and grabbed his own.

When Nathaniel went downstairs, he shot at the men, hitting one. The injured burglar fled in a car, Pryor said. Soon after, officers stopped a car driven by Andrew Smalls, 19, at Dorchester Road and Scarsdale Street.

Police found Rashaun Dawson, 18, inside with a gunshot wound. Dawson was taken to the Medical University Hospital. His condition late Wednesday was not available. Smalls was arrested on a burglary charge and failure to stop for blue lights. Dawson was charged with burglary and possession of a stolen firearm.

Pryor said Nathaniel is not facing any charges.
