High school boys basketball: Northwestern Trojans roll over Clover

Dunks only count as two-point baskets, the same as a jump shot or layup.

However, the Northwestern Trojans used six second-half dunks as huge momentum builders in a 68-41 home victory over Clover on Friday in Region 3-AAAA action.

Center Rontavious McClure, who had three dunks, was the first to get in on the slam action by catching a alley-oop pass from Mustafa Love and throwing it down while being fouled in the process.

Leading 45-31 after three quarters, Orr added another dunk early in the fourth. Love added two more stuffs, and McClure followed with two more dunks. After all the excitement, the Trojans, who led by only three at the half, found themselves with a 20-point advantage, 58-38.

"It is good to have a game like that," Northwestern coach Mike Gossett said. "But the bottom line is that we did a much better job defensively in the second half, and that allowed us to get things turned around."

The Trojans, 11-9 overall and 2-4 in Region 3-AAAA, got out of the gate with a commanding 12-2 lead. Clover, however, gnawed at the deficit and trailed by only three, 26-23, at intermission.

Gaffney 64, Rock Hill 58: When Rock Hill and Gaffney played a little over two weeks ago in Gaffney, there wasn't much drama, as the Indians led throughout an 18-point victory.

Friday night in Rock Hill, there was plenty of tension in the building but Gaffney still left town with a victory and with its perfect record in Region 3-AAAA still in-tact at 6-0. The Bearcats dropped their third in a row and fell to 2-4 in the region.

Rock Hill coach Eric Rollings was fuming at the end of the game, but not at his players. He did make the officials aware of his frustrations in a lengthy conversation in front of the scorer's table with 7.1 seconds remaining after point guard Malik Crawford was called for a flagrant foul.

The Bearcats were able to keep super sophomore L.J. Peak from getting too involved in the game as he was saddled with two quick fouls just minutes into the first period. Peak fouled out with 4:37 remaining in the game and a quiet 11 points.
