A new Winthrop University scholarship will honor a 2010 graduate who died in a car accident days after receiving her diploma.
The recently endowed Hannah Ruth Floyd Scholarship was made possible through leadership gifts from Floyd's parents, 1979 alumna Fran Floyd McNaughton and Bill Floyd, both of Chester. The scholarship is worth more than $25,000.
Hannah Floyd died in December 2010.
Floyd, who came to Winthrop after graduating from the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics, majored in psychology and biology at the university. She also worked as a research assistant.
The scholarship is awarded to students majoring in psychology and/or biology, with preference given to female students from Chester, and second preference to female students from York, Lancaster, Union and Fairfield counties. Additional preference is also given to students who played at least two seasons of Dixie Girls Softball and those selected at All-Stars, both honors which Floyd had received.
