Other branches plan to join Rock Hill, Fort Mill offering Wi-Fi within months

York County Library officials hope to have wireless Internet access at all branches within the next few months.

The Rock Hill and Fort Mill libraries already have Wi-Fi, said library Executive Director Colleen Kaphengst.

"We're slowly working through the branches," she said. "Because we're dealing with different telephone companies, we've hit a couple of snags."

The York branch will host a "hub" - a device that can be used to hook up other computers to devices - for the branches in Clover and Lake Wylie.

No definite date has been set for the hub to be up and running.

Recently, the state provided telecommunications networks for libraries to get wireless. However, local branches didn't have the bandwidth to mount it, Kaphengst said.

Last year, the telecommunications line was replaced, and the network was updated.

Library users have asked about wireless access, Kaphengst said.

"We just don't have enough computers in-house," she said. "A lot of people like to come and work on school projects or things for work. Until we had the bandwidth, we didn't want the Wi-Fi to slow down our other Internet access."

The wireless improvements are one of many upgrades to the library system in the past few years. A new roof was installed, as well as a new boiler, security doors and fire exit stairwells at the downtown Rock Hill location on East Black Street.

Much of it was made possible through the York County Council, which approved $470,000 for repairs and replacements.
