Two young boys, ages 1 and 5, were struck and killed in west Charlotte on Wednesday morning, police said.

The accident happened at the corner of Shady Lane and West Tyvola Road shortly after 8 a.m.

The boys’ father said he was walking his sons to their day care on West Boulevard when the crash happened.

A driver and passenger were in the delivery truck that hit the children, police said. It's unclear exactly how the accident happened.

Eyewitness News spoke to managers of the nearby day care, and they said the 1-year-old was Jeremy Brewton and the 5-year-old was Kadrien Pendergrass. Workers at Dixon Academy said the boys’ father walked them to and from day care every day.

The owner of the day care said she and her staff are devastated.

One man said he was at the scene right after the accident and spoke to the children's father.

“He was very upset, tears coming out of his eyes,” Pierre Means said. “I said, ‘How old they are?’ He said, ‘1 and 5 years old.’ It just broke my heart.”

Police said they are still investigating and don’t know yet if any charges against the driver will be filed.
