A ‘Charlie Brown’ lesson from South Pointe High

Published: May 20, 2012

On June 13, the South Pointe High School Theatre Department will perform the musical, “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” at the Museum of York County. The musical will be performed in conjunction with the museum’s “Peanuts . . . Naturally” exhibit.

The musical also will be performed at South Pointe on June 14, 15 and 16 beginning at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.

Jimmy Chrismon, the theatre director at South Pointe, has been at the school since it opened in 2005. He attended UNC-Charlotte.

South Pointe’s theatre department initially produced the musical during the last school year. This year, the students performed, “Hello, Dolly.”

Chrismon spoke with The Herald last week about the musical and the students at South Pointe.

How did it come about for you to do the musical again this year?

“’We did it last year for a competition. Several months back, I got an email from the museum asking us if we’d be willing to put together that production again to perform for the ‘Peanuts’ exhibit. . . . I still had a few of the people who were in the cast still here. . . . It’s an easy and fun show to put together. The kids were excited to do it again.”

How many students are involved?

“There are six students. It’s actually students from Rock Hill High and South Pointe. We’re working together on it.”

What’s in the musical?

“It’s basically just a day in the life of Charlie Brown, from the time he wakes up in the morning until he goes to bed at night. It’s various vignettes from the actual comic strips in the paper (that) come to life on stage.”

What are some of the things that happens to him during that day?

“He goes to the psychiatrist booth with Lucy. He’s late for school, chasing the bus trying to get on it. His interactions with Snoopy and writing a book report for school. And watching the stars at night before he and his friends go to bed.”

Is there an overall message that comes from it?

“Basically it’s (that) your friends should love you for who you are, and you don’t have to be something you’re not.”

Why is the musical fun to produce?

“It’s a sweet, sweet play. I first directed it in college as a senior project. I’ve done it numerous times since then. It’s one of my favorite shows. I never get tired of it. And the kids always have a good time making the cartoons come to life. It has a lot of fun music. People are going to walk away singing the tunes. Snoopy is always everybody’s favorite because he does a big song and dance number at the end of the show.”

You must enjoy working with high school students.

“I love it. They keep me on my toes. They are so much fun. When the kids love what they’re doing and they can tell that you love what you’re doing, you have a great time and don’t really feel like you’re coming to work very often.”

How would you describe the quality of the students you work with at South Pointe?

“We have just an amazing group of kids to pull from. It’s just really difficult making decisions. When we did the auditions for this show, it really came down to who could be here for every rehearsal, not who was better.”
