LANCASTER — Police say a Lancaster woman left her two young children home alone for more than two hours while she went to a convenience store early Saturday morning.
Myeshia Shree McCain, 27, of 1504 Caroline Court Apartments, is charged with two counts of unlawful conduct toward a child after a neighbor said her 3-year-old daughter knocked on her door at about 4:39 a.m., according to a Lancaster police report.
The girl was crying and said her mother wasn’t home. The neighbor then called police, the report states.
When officers knocked on the door of the girl’s home, she opened the door and said her 1-year-old brother was home with her. The girl allowed police to go inside the apartment, where they saw the boy asleep in a playpen wearing only a diaper and without a pillow or cover, the report states. The toddler also had food smeared on his face.
The girl said their mother gave the boy sausages but he squeezed the meat and made a mess, the report states. The girl told police she was unsure how long or where her mother had gone, but she knew her mother didn’t have a car.
More officers arrived on the scene and helped search for relatives who could take care of the children. Officials also notified the state Department of Social Services.
Almost two hours later, police saw McCain walk towards the house from the woods behind the apartment. McCain told officials she left her apartment at 1:45 a.m. She said she returned to the apartment but then left again to go to the store.
The children were placed in their grandmother’s custody.
