Fort Mill beats Lugoff-Elgin 39-21 in return to 4A football

Herald correspondentAugust 25, 2012

Back in 4A for the first time in a couple years, Fort Mill opened the 2012 season against a 4A foe they have seen in recent years — the Lugoff-Elgin Demons.

Despite being in 3A the past couple of seasons, Fort Mill has held its own against the 4A Demons and Friday was no exception as the Jackets won 39-21.

The Jackets had a balanced attack during each half as they threw the ball a lot in the first half and ran it in the second half.

Lugoff-Elgin’s 14 points in the fourth quarter were mostly against the Jackets second and third squads.

“It’s a pretty good start,” said Fort Mill coach Ed Susi. “We got out of this healthy.”

The Jackets kept the ball on the ground to open the third quarter as they scored on their first series in just four plays. Senior Tony Godbolt bolted up the middle to score on a 22-yard run to put the game out of reach for Lugoff-Elgin. Godbolt rushed for 72 yards on 14 and scored two touchdowns.

Fort Mill’s defense did so well in the third quarter that it allowed the Jackets to start in good field position inside Demons territory.

Wells did the major damage on the ground in Fort Mill’s second series as he had a yard gobbling first-down run of 17 yards to get the Jackets near the red zone. Sophomore Malik Long punched the ball in three plays later to extend the Jackets lead. Fort Mill picked up four first downs going just 50 yards for the score.

Fort Mill opened the second quarter like it finished the first by moving the ball down the field with ease.

After blocking a Demons punt to get the ball at the 31-yard line, Fort Mill scored in seven plays as senior Rylan Wells and senior Josh Lafoe hooked up on a 17-yard pass to get inside the red zone. Wells ran in from two yards out four plays later. Wells threw for 153 yards and went 8-for-12 passing with a touchdown. He also ran for 42 yards on eight carries and scored twice on the ground.

“They put eight in the box to start and Rylan did well throwing the ball,” Susi said.

Lugoff-Elgin finally got its offense together as quarterback Shon Belton led the Demons’ 80 yards in 14 plays, with Belton doing the majority of the work running the ball. Belton finished things off by scoring from five yards out to put Lugoff-Elgin on the board.

The Jackets didn’t allow their defense to rest much during the game as the offense work quickly.

In the opening quarter, Fort Mill showed a balanced attack out of the gate as it went 64 yards on 15 plays mixing the offense up before Godbolt scored on a one-yard run.

Godbolt had a big run of 15 yards and Wells hit sophomore Breshon Simpson on two first down passes to get Fort Mill deep into Demons territory to set up the score.

Lugoff-Elgin gained yards on its first drive, but the Jackets’ defense did a good job of keeping it contained.

Fort Mill didn’t wait long to get back in the end zone as Wells hit Lafoe on the first play from scrimmage for a 70-yard touchdown.

The Jackets’ Zach Fowler intercepted a Demons pass on Lugoff-Elgin’s next series at Lugoff-Elgin’s 25-yard line and returned it to the one-yard line, where Wells punched it in on the next play.
