GASTONIA, N.C. — Calvin Johnson tormented the Clover Blue Eagles on Friday.
The Forestview senior shares the name, number and position of the Detroit Lions superstar. Although slightly less imposing at 6-foot-3, Johnson provided a pair of uncanny Megatron-like plays to lead the Jaguars to a 38-16 win in Week 1 action.
The Jaguars defeated Clover (0-2) for the first time in nine meetings.
Theyre a quick strike offense with some talent, Clover coach Dan Devine said. They found some big targets to pick on us with.
The teams combined for 35 points in a something-for-everyone first quarter. Clovers JeVaughn Starr jumped a route on the second play from scrimmage, and that resulted in a 23-yard interception return for a score. Starr has two interceptions in two games.
Forestview (1-1), however, rattled off 21 points over the next 10 minutes. Bishop Ford scored on an 8-yard run, and the Jaguars tacked on a 10-yard touchdown connection from Logan Bradley to Moe Neal. On the next possession, Bradley fired a bubble screen to Johnson, who pulled up and lofted a pass to a wide-open for Mykelti Armstrong for a 72-yard score.
The Blue Eagles responded with a wrinkle of their own. Clover showed a spread formation, and quarterback Scott Jackson hit Shawn Anderson on a wheel route for a 73-yard score. The Blue Eagles trailed 21-14 after one quarter, but that is as close as they got.
Forestview scored 17 more unanswered points in the second quarter. Johnson provided another dagger with a 31-yard touchdown catch on a bootleg from Bradley. A 33-yard field goal by Colton Rouse provided a 38-14 halftime lead.
The Blue Eagles tightened up in the second half and gave up no points and one first down, and added a safety on a bad punt snap.
Thats what we talked about at halftime, Devine said. This is a tough, physical bunch, but our weakness right now is were not mentally tough enough.
Clover also squandered two chances in the red zone.
