YORK — There is a logical explanation for what may appear to be low York offensive statistics in its 34-16 home victory over Boiling Springs on Friday night.
That is because the most effective Cougars offense was a swarming defense, which picked off five Bulldogs passes, including three which were converted into touchdowns.
York returned two interceptions for touchdowns, and another deep in Bulldog territory to lead to another score.
Cougars defensive lineman Jiquese Brown grabbed a deflected pass attempt on the first play from scrimmage at the Bulldogs 25. Six plays later, York quarterback Spencer Carroll lofted a 7-yard pass in the end zone to Markel Castle for a 7-0 lead.
Carroll fired his second scoring pass to Tay Neely for a 14-3 lead midway through the second. The Bulldogs, however, appeared to be on the move with a methodical seven-play drive from their own 29 to the Cougars 26.
The drive then came to a sudden halt when Dominique Mobley stepped in front of Daniel Thompsons pass attempt and displayed blazing speed on a 76-yard interception return.
Following the ensuing kickoff, the Cougars got another pick-six when safety Lee Wright grabbed another interception and raced 33-yards to the end zone for a 27-3 advantage.
Boiling Springs, on the strength of two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Thompson, rallied to cut the deficit to 27-16 with 8:32 remaining. However, York iced the contest when Carroll found Simpson wide open behind the Bulldogs secondary for a 69-yard touchdown pass with 5:21 remaining.
This was a great win over a Big-16 school, Cougars coach Bobby Carroll said. We corrected a lot of mistakes that we made against Chester, but of course, Chester has a good football team.
We know that we have to continue to get better, but we saw positive things out there tonight and we want to continue building on that.
York, 2-0, will be on the road to face Gaffney next week.
