Police: Man assaulted, kidnapped ex-girlfriend at Rock Hill apartment

Published: September 11, 2012

— Police arrested a man they say hid in the breezeway of his ex-girlfriend’s Rock Hill apartment, forced her inside, assaulted her and then forced her to drive him to a gas station.

Barry Tanner, 24, of Spartanburg is charged with burglary, aggravated assault, kidnapping and stalking, according to Rock Hill police documents. He is currently held at the Rock Hill jail, where bond has not yet been set.

On Friday, police were called to the BP gas station on Dave Lyle Boulevard after clerks said a man and woman were arguing in the parking lot and the man was trying to pull the woman out of a car. Police spoke with the woman, 21, who said her Tanner, her ex-boyfriend, assaulted her and then fled before officers arrived, according to a Rock Hill police report.

She said she returned to her apartment after staying at a friend’s house and found Tanner hiding outside the building, the report states. She said Tanner forced her inside, attacked her and bit her finger. Officers noticed cuts and blood on her right index finger.

When a neighbor went to the woman’s door, Tanner ordered her to “Tell them you are OK,” the report states. Tanner then forced her to drive to the BP gas station, where he assaulted her again. The store clerks called police, while Tanner fled in a white Ford pickup truck but not before he took the woman’s cell phone, the report states.

Tanner was arrested Monday.
