Nation Ford Falcons hold off Ridge View in 35-28 thriller

Herald correspondentSeptember 15, 2012

— A stronger version of the Ridge View Blazers came back to Fort Mill this week trying to not have history repeat itself.

It didn’t work.

The Blazers, who were beat by Fort Mill High last week, had to come back to Fort Mill Township this week to face Nation Ford, giving the Falcons fits in the process.

The game was close throughout, but things got wild in the fourth quarter as the teams combined for 28 points in a shootout resulting in a 35-28 Nation Ford win.

“We beat a good football team tonight,” said Nation Ford coach Michael Allen. “This crowd comes to fight and they faced some adversity and they are starting to understand what facing adversity is.”

With Nation Ford up 21-14 to start the final quarter, the Blazers started the fourth by scoring on the first play from scrimmage as senior quarterback Nolan Randolph ran in from 10 yards out to score his third touchdown of the game.

Nation Ford matched with a score of its own and took the lead just under 10 minutes left in the game. Junior quarterback Dalton Helms hit junior Riley Hilton on a 27 yard pass to get Nation Ford into scoring position before senior Daniel Jackson took it to the house two plays later for a touchdown.

On the ensuing kickoff, Ridge View’s Tavaris Anderson fielded the ball and got tackled, but the ball popped up in the air to senior Demario Evans, who ran 87 yards to tie the game at 28-28.

Nation Ford’s Hilton and Helms connected again to get the Falcons into the red zone on a 27 yard pass play. After a Falcons penalty, Nation Ford’s score was set up by a 15-yard run from junior Andrew Barr and then Jackson punched it in two plays later for his third touchdown of the game, which was the eventual game winner.

Ridge View came out in the third quarter and put together a 17 play drive that ate eight minutes off the clock and was aided by a big roughing the kicker penalty on a punt that gave the Blazers a first down instead of turning the ball over.

From there, Ridge View went 65 yards and scored on a two-yard run by Randolph. The two-point conversion tied the game at 14.

A pick by Falcons junior defensive back Brandon Cureton on the Blazers next drive gave Nation Ford good field position to start at the Blazers’ 27. Facing a fourth-and-10, Helms hit Hilton at the 10 for a first down, which set up a 10-yard touchdown run by Jackson that put Nation Ford on top.

Neither team scored in the opening quarter, but Nation Ford put together a good, clock-eating drive that took them into the second quarter.

The Falcons were unable to put it into the end zone, but Nation Ford was able to crack the scoreboard first by coming away with a 35-yard field goal from senior Corey Condron.

The Blazers put together a substantial drive on its first possession in the second quarter. Starting at the 25, they mixed things up as they moved down the field.

Randolph led Ridge View, completing three passes to three different receivers, for three first downs and also carried the ball for a first down as the Blazers put the ball in the end zone on a Randolph 3-yard run to take the lead. Ridge View’s drive consisted of 12 plays for 75 yards.

After a 36-yard return from Nation Ford senior AK McCoy to start the next drive, the Falcons picked up two straight first downs on throws by Helms to Hilton and senior Dylan Yagle.

Despite the first downs, Nation Ford struggled again to get the ball into the end zone for the second time and again turned to Condron this time to tie the game at six apiece.

Right before the end of the half, Helms threw an interception which gave the Blazers the ball at the 9 with just 20 seconds left. On Ridge View’s next snap, Barr sacked Randolph, causing him to cough up the ball which lineman Kenny Settle scooped up and strolled into the end zone to give Nation Ford its first touchdown of the game.
