Lewisville Lions hold off Buford for 21-7 win

CorrespondentSeptember 15, 2012

— Lewisville coach Will Mitchell described his team as having just enough left in the tank to survive with a 21-7 road victory over Buford on Friday night.

“We are a Class A team that dresses only 27 and many of our guys go both ways; we got dinged up and were limping a little bit late in the game with bumps and bruises,” Mitchell said. “This was a Class AA team, and for the past two weeks, we played another AA and also a AAA team.

“So late in the game, we began to get a little bit bumped up and wore down.”

However, Lewisville was able to overcome those odds by allowing a 21-0 halftime lead to stand, despite a late Yellow Jackets rally.

The Lions took a 21-0 lead when quarterback Laquavious Walls connected with Allen Jordan with a 10-yard pass in the first quarter, followed by Walls running 10 yards in the end zone midway through the second.

Prior to the half, defensive back Malcolm Means scooped up an errant punt snap and raced 48 yards for a score.

Buford, however, stayed with the power-running attack and got two late scores. Josh Mullens plunged 1 yard for a score with 7:59 remaining. On its next possession, Buford turned a Lions interception into a 40-yard scoring drive with Mullens scampering 7 yards to pay dirt.

Defensively, the Lions came up with five quarterback sacks and forced five Yellow Jackets turnovers, four fumbles and an interception.

“Give our defensive credit; I caused them to be put in tough situations,” said Mitchell. “However, they came up with huge plays the entire game.”

Lewisville improved to 4-1 heading into next week’s open date before opening region competition against McBee.
