Rock Hill Bearcats back on track with win at Clover

Special to The HeraldSeptember 29, 2012

— Memorial Stadium fans were in a festive mood Friday night for Clover’s Homecoming matchup against Rock Hill. But the Blue Eagles’ spirits were dampened by Rock Hill wide receivers Jaleel Scott and Malik Crawford, who both scored two touchdowns in the Bearcats’ 49-10 win.

Rock Hill (2-4, 1-1 in Region 3-AAAA) was in danger of starting the season with five losses in six games, but coach Joe Montgomery’s team dominated for four quarters to pick up its second win.

Clover drops to 0-6 (0-2 in the region).

“Anytime you win, you gain confidence,” Montgomery said. “This team was 0-5 and we beat them like they were 0-5.”

Bearcats running back Jonathan Adams broke two tackles and ran 31 yards to score on the Bearcats’ second offensive play of the game. Minutes later, quarterback Josh Erby ran 26 yards for another touchdown, and the Bearcats were on their way.

“(Rock Hill) sure played well out there,” Clover interim head coach John Barrett said. “We’ve got a lot to work on and it’ll get better. We’ll keep trying hard and competing.”

The Bearcats were unstoppable on offense. And Rock Hill got an added spark from its special teams, when Crawford found a picture-perfect gap in coverage after a Clover punt in the second quarter to run in from 60 yards.

Blue Eagle fans had something to cheer about late in the third quarter when twin running backs Kevis and Ladarius Adams methodically pushed their team 82 yards on a drive that ended with a 2-yard scoring run by Ladarius Adams.

But Erby’s crisp passes to Jermaine White, Scott and Crawford in the waning minutes put the game out of reach.

Clover now prepares for Northwestern next week, while Rock Hill will get ready for Fort Mill.
