FORT MILL — York coach Bobby Carroll was quick to joke that his son, Spencer, the starting quarterback, did not have much athleticism after being caught from behind during an early 62-yard run against Fort Mill Friday.
He told me that he ran out of gas, Bobby Carroll said with a grin.
But seriously, Bobby Carroll said that his son possesses plenty of football intelligence, which was displayed with a 184 yard and four touchdown passing performance, all in the first half.
That was more than enough for the York Cougars, who remained unbeaten with a 49-0 road victory at Bob Jones Stadium against the Fort Mill Yellow Jackets.
Carroll completed 18-of-28 attempts and spread the ball around to seven different receivers. He also moved well in the pocket, scrambling for 64 yards on four attempts.
Of course, I could not have done anything without the five guys up front and the outstanding ground of receivers that we have, he said. With those guys, that makes the execution of our offense much easier.
Bobby Carroll said that his son has aspirations of one day being a coach and teacher.
He watches as much film as any player that I have seen. He is a real student of the game, he said.
York, which also got an outstanding defensive performance with the teams second shutout of the season, took control of the contest with a 28-point second-quarter explosion.
Running back Markel Castle connected with Lamin Yansanah on a 45-yard halfback pass to put the exclamation point on a dominating first half.
Defensively, York yielded only 129 yards and 11 first downs, and forced five turnovers.
This is about as good a defensive crowd that we have had here, Bobby Carroll said. Fort Mill does a real good job running the football and this defense is designed to defend the spread. They did a good job adjusting and that is a credit to all of our coaches.
