RICHBURG — The Lewisville Lions’ return to their glory years hit a sudden bump in the road Friday with a 34-6 home loss to Lamar.

Having won five straight for a 6-1 record and entering the Class-A ranking in the No. 10, Lewisville faced a tough test against perennial Class-A contender Lamar with the winner having an inside track to the Region 3-A title.

The Lions, however, were not up the test as Lamar displayed tremendous quickness on both sides of the ball.

“We did not play well in every facet of the game,” Lewisville coach Will Mitchell said. “It was not only on offense and defense, we also did not do a good job with special teams play.

“I told our team that we are going to have games and opponents like this one, but we have to learn how to handle that (in order to grow into being a top-level football program),” Mitchell said.

Lewisville needed a 14-yard run from quarterback Laquavious Walls late in the forth quarter to prevent a shut-out loss. Otherwise, the Lions were only able to generate 147 total yards, including 26 yards passing on just 5-of-21 attempts.

Lamar, which was led by sophomore quarterback Quan Brown, got the ball into the hands of various playmakers. Akeem Peoples did the most damage with eight catches for 114 yards and also a 14-yard touchdown pass on a trick play which put the Silver Foxes in control, 14-0, in the second quarter.

“That is what we do in this offense,” Lamar coach JR Boyd said. “We have good running backs and we love to spread the ball around to different people.”

Brown, who completed 19 passes for 194 yards, connected with Peoples with a 34-yard pass to the 1-yard line with 12 seconds remaining before the half. Scrambling to beat the clock, Brown sneaked into the end zone with .02 remaining, putting Lamar in the driver’s seat, 20-0, at intermission.

Mitchell said that his team will work hard to continue to improve, and is confident of a potential second meeting with Lamar in the state playoffs.

“The difference will be it would be at their place,” he said. “But we have to improve and play much better than we did tonight if we are to think about getting that far.”

Lewisville will have an open date next week.
