Police: Shoplifter smashed Rock Hill officer’s hand in car door

Published: October 8, 2012

— An off-duty Rock Hill police officer received treatment at Riverview Medical Center on Friday when a shoplifting suspect he was chasing shut a car door on his hand.

Officer Jason Haynes, 26, was in T.J. Maxx on John Ross Parkway when the call about shoplifters in the store went out. Haynes saw a man and woman placing items in the woman’s purse before they ran out with $2,000 worth of merchandise, according to a Rock Hill police report.

Haynes chased the shoplifters in the parking lot, where they attempted to get into a gold Chrysler 300L that was already occupied by two other people, the report states. Haynes tried to take the woman into custody but she closed the door on his right hand.

The suspects drove away. The N.C. Highway Patrol and Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department found the car on Arrowood Road in Charlotte and chased the four suspects, all in their twenties. Their names were not available on the police report.
