ROCK HILL — Store clerks say a man wearing a baseball cap, dark jeans and a blue jean jacket possibly stole $2,200 worth of Newport cigarettes from a Rock Hill convenience store over a three-week period, according to a police report.
An employee with the Circle K on 1839 Celanese Road caught the man walk into an unlocked office Tuesday and try to take cartons of Newport cigarettes, a Rock Hill police report states. Wednesday morning, store managers took inventory of their cigarettes and realized the store was missing $2,200 worth of Newports.
The store’s surveillance video shows the suspect entering the office around 11:30 p.m. and taking cigarette cartons on Oct. 2 and Oct. 9, which were both Tuesdays. The manager said cigarette shipments came in on Tuesdays around 11:30 p.m. The store changed the shipments to Wednesdays, which is why a clerk was able to catch the suspect on Tuesday.
Earlier this month, two men stole $500 worth of cigarettes from the Rite Aid pharmacy on Ebenezer Road Oct. 8. An older man, possibly 50, distracted the clerk by asking for hemorrhoid cream, police documents show. His accomplice, believed to be in his 20s, then stole 10- 15 cartons of cigarettes.
