ROCK HILL — A Rock Hill father is behind bars, facing charges for drug possession, after police say he became unruly when his mother tried to take custody of his daughter Saturday.
Matthew Adam Pierce, 26, is charged with unlawful possession of a Schedule IV drug, according to a Rock Hill police report. He was also cited for public disorderly conduct and is currently held at the York County Detention Center on a $10,000 bond.
Around 5 p.m. Saturday, Pierce’s mother asked police to help her take custody of her granddaughter because the child was living in filthy conditions, according to a Rock Hill police report. The girl’s age was not listed.
The woman said she went to her son’s College Avenue home, where his 20-year-old girlfriend agreed to allow her to take the child for the evening and began packing the baby’s things. The grandmother found that the clothes were dirty and the baby bag didn’t have any food in it, the report states.
She managed to find some clean clothes but found several food items covered in fleas in the kitchen, the report states. She requested a police escort when Pierce, who she feared was on drugs, started yelling and lodging threats.
Police noticed that Pierce’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot, his speech was slurred and he had cottonmouth, the report states. He had trouble keeping his focus, and he flailed his arms through the air.
Once he was arrested, Pierece told officers he took pills for a variety of medical conditions, including taking methadone and another drug for a liver condition he wouldn’t elaborate on, the report states. They found Xanax in one of his pockets. Officers realized Pierce was on supervisory release status from the Florida Department of Corrections.
Pierce’s mother told officers that she’s contacted the Department of Social Services regarding the living conditions, but Pierce and his girlfriend always make sure the house is clean before scheduled visits.
At one point in time, the child was in her custody. Once Pierce regained custody of his daughter, the girl had trouble sleeping and lost a lot of weight, the grandmother told police. Police advised the woman to contact family court for a temporary custody order along with contacting DSS.
